Description:

The 2020 El Enemigo Semillón is a white wine from Mendoza, Argentina. Sourced from old-vine Semillón, this wine showcases the region’s unique terroir and the innovative winemaking of El Enemigo.

Vineyard and Production

The grapes come from a 70-year-old vineyard in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, located at 930 meters above sea level. The high altitude and calcareous soils contribute to the wine’s freshness and minerality. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts to preserve purity. The wine ages for 15 months in oak barrels, with 20% undergoing aging under a veil of flor, a winemaking technique that enhances texture and imparts saline and nutty characteristics.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Golden yellow with bright reflections.
  • Aroma: Intense notes of grilled pineapple, dried apple, green olive, salted butter, and smoked almond, layered with hints of citrus and waxed lemon.
  • Palate: Medium-bodied with a rich, textured profile. The wine delivers a toasty, saline character, balanced by vibrant acidity and a long mineral-driven finish.

Critical Acclaim

  • James Suckling: 94 points – Recognized for its layered complexity, bright acidity, and smoky, toasty elements.
  • Wine Enthusiast: 92 points – Praised for its almond, acacia, and citrus aromas, with a fresh yet structured palate.

Serving and Pairing

Best served at 10-12°C (50-54°F), this Semillón pairs beautifully with rich seafood, grilled shellfish, and roasted poultry. Its creamy texture and vibrant acidity also complement truffle risotto, soft cheeses, and earthy mushroom-based dishes.
