Description:

The 2004 Catena 'Nicolás Catena Zapata' is a flagship red blend from Bodega Catena Zapata, one of Argentina's most esteemed wineries. This wine exemplifies the winery's dedication to producing world-class wines that reflect the unique terroir of Mendoza.

Vineyard and Production

  • Grape Composition: Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) and Malbec (28%).

  • Vineyards:

    • La Pirámide Vineyard: Located at 3,117 feet (950 meters) in the Agrelo District, Luján de Cuyo Region.
    • Domingo Vineyard: Situated at 3,675 feet (1,120 meters) in the Villa Bastías District, Tupungato Region, Uco Valley.
    • Adrianna Vineyard: At an elevation of 4,757 feet (1,450 meters) in the Gualtallary District, Tupungato Region, Uco Valley.
  • Soil: Diverse compositions ranging from deep alluvial loam with clay in La Pirámide, gravel-covered surfaces in Domingo, to alluvial, gravelly soils with limestone deposits in Adrianna.

  • Vinification: Hand-harvested grapes undergo de-stemming and whole berry fermentation in new French oak barrels for 18 days, followed by 24 months of aging in French oak.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Saturated black-purple hue.

  • Aroma: A complex bouquet featuring notes of pain grillé, mineral, espresso, saddle leather, cassis, black currant, and black raspberry.

  • Palate: Opulently textured with ripe, sweet flavors, balanced by elegance and power. The wine exhibits a harmonious integration of fruit, tannins, and acidity, leading to a long, persistent finish.

Critical Acclaim

  • Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 98 points. Described as Argentina’s equivalent of a great vintage of Lafite-Rothschild, with potential to age gracefully for decades.

  • Decanter: 96 points. Noted for its firm structure and potential for further development.

  • James Suckling: 95 points. Praised for its depth, complexity, and refined character.

Serving and Pairing

Decant the wine for at least an hour before serving at 16-18°C (61-64°F) to allow its full expression. This robust and elegant blend pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats, roasted lamb, game dishes, and aged cheeses.
